I believe the that some of characters are descended from Shinto gods
Orihime desecended from Ama-No-Uzume
Ichigo desecended from Susanoo ( He is a god desecent on is mother's side)
Rukia desecended from Amaterasu
Ishida desecended from Tsukuyomi
Renji desended from Raijin (Raiden)
Oh my, if that were true that means Ichigo, Rukia, and Ishida are distant cousins.
Another one I refuse to let go of
The Shinto goddess Izanami once ruled the Soul Society but then stopped due to an incident that made her leave and gave Yamamoto who was her right hand man the postion. As a result many of Kami that did the job of Shinigami orginally left with her to Yomi (the Japanese hell). So Yamamoto started the Shinigami Academy with the Soul of the deceased to substitute for the Kami that did job orginally.
Oh and I almost forget to say that Orihime comes from a very rich family.
